SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES

Sunday Night At The Movies (or SNATM) is a weekly, hour long radio programme on FBi 94.5 FM in Sydney (the station is also webcast).

It is described as 'Nocturnal Sound Sculpting with a guest artist every week' and represents an incredible outlet of creative sound work. There really are 'no rules' and a show can be anything from ambient twiddlings, to synchronised architecture walks designed to be recieved on headphones walking around the city, to live radio plays to... well, pretty much anything!

I have done a few pieces for SNATM over the past few years - each work being a huge amount of work, and enormously challenging and fun to do.

Here are the complete archives of each piece I have done. Higher resolution (CD quality) available on request. Please feel free to download/Broadcast/transmit etc... but be aware that there are probably massive copyright infringments everywhere, and please credit me and drop me line to let me know.

Travel
First broadcast 9th April, 2006.

In between spaces, going places, not there yet.

The process; of getting there.

Airport lounges, train platforms, foreign languages, exchange rates, nights alone in foreign cities.

Dislocation, pathos, ennui and the howl of distance.

An exploration of travel.

Mouth Off
First broadcast 23rd of May, 2004.

Dan Conway explores the world of... words.

Melded, mangled, set in opposition, dissected, tortured, revitalized, and then moulded into cacophony. Words.

From tone poems and cutups to textures made of dislocated babble.

An exploration of the sound beneath the meanings of our words.

Words cut free. Words enclosed. Words unleashed. Words abused and stripped of their context, meaning and shape.

The vocal utterances of human beings in all their beauty, power and variation.

T.A.Z and the Broadsheets of Ontological Anarchy

Or an audio ode to the book: 'The Temporary Autonomous Zone, Ontological Anarchy, Poetic Terrorism' by Hakim Bey.

This piece is my attempt to put into audio some of the amazing texts contained in this book.

It is as much as the result of a love affair with the book, as the book is a love affair with both language and ideas. I want to provide a back drop, an audio framework for the texts in this book that,in my, ears, does justice to the beauty, power and originality of the words.

I hope in some small way, to have done justice to this great work.

RECLAIM THE STREETS

So in the late 90’s I got involved with an organization (or perhaps ‘movement’ is a better term) called ‘Reclaim the Streets’. This was a tremendously inspiring, empowering, educational and creative time for me. For more information on RTS go here, here, here or here.

During this period I produced a bunch of audio for the RTS cause, ranging from radio adds surreptitiously slipped on air at various radio stations (through both my contacts and sympathetic Dj’s) to content for on-site pirate radio and Web broadcasts etc…

I am hoping some of this stuff may be useful to others out there ‘fighting the good fight’ against the cult of Car culture.

Dan Conway's Radio Production Training Notes

I've done quite a bit of radio producton work over the years, and being employed a few years ago as the imaging producer for FBI radio, I was very keen to train up people in the production evnironment.

As such I developed this training course (I won't bore you with the details of the battle with the management I had in putting this together). It's not a 'how to use protools' kind of thing at all. Much more an in depth hardcore 'this is what you need to know and learn in order to become an effective producer' kind of thing. And you'll learn (in two pages) EXACTLY what sound is! Kind of encouraging kids to becoming free thinkers, but well grounded in some audio theory.

I delivered the course a few times - over four weeks - one lesson a week plus serious homework assignments, and it seemed to be a roaring success. So if your keen on audio production (the course is aimed at radio production, but anyone interested in learning about audio will find some good stuff in here), download it, check it out, and email me massive props.

Regards, Dan
