Review of the 1st Presbytery Film Festival 13-15th June 2003

Well, the 1st presbytery Film Festival was a roaring success. 16 Films over three days, a bright, 2.5 meter super sharp picture thanks to the Tesseract projector, a nice clear, spacious and loud sound with lots of bass thanks to Alex Holver and the Mcrent folks, 15 couch and armchair spots, lots of chairs up the back and cushions down the front. Occasional bouts of popcorn thanks to my Californian Dad’s secret family recipe and a bunch of great movies. The Cold weather meant a little blow heater down the front had to keep the room heated for most of the time but gave the wonderful excuse of snuggling up under dunas and blankets. And of course, lots of nice people coming and going and chatting out on the Veranda between films.

Friday night saw at least 50 people pack into our darkened room for Nosferatu accompanied by the Claire Cooper Ensemble. This Consisted of Clare Cooper on Harp, April XXXXX etc.. The eerie ambiences of a Transistor radio tuning into fragments of staticy airwaves and sporadic moog electronics provided a nice counterpoint to the more traditional Cello and harp playing. Spontaneous Foley by all the group and the anguished strangulated vocal noises of XXX were definite highlights.

The Sunday performance of R-70 was also a resounding success. Beautiful sparse, minimal but continually evolving micro-housey glitched up grooves with lush pads and beautiful distant arpeggios from Terry’s Guitar provided the most perfect accompaniment to a wonderful film.

Here are a few pictures we took on the last day during R-70’s performance, unfortunately we didn’t have our shit together sufficiently to take more photos of the other bits.

We’re talking about one more this winter, probably in a few months time so stay tuned.
